2006 STREET IMPROVEMENTS
Indianola, Iowa
The City of Indianola selected Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. to design and manage their 2006 Street Improvements Project. The 2.2 miles of project area included parts of West Clinton Avenue, South "E" Street, North "C" Street, West Boston Avenue, North "B" Street, North Buxton Street, North Howard Street, and East Salem Avenue.

The project included removing the existing street material and replacing it with 23,008 square yards of PCC pavement. The street widths varied from 23.5 feet to 29 feet. 2,270 linear feet of storm sewer pipe was installed along with 4 storm sewer manholes, and 31 storm sewer intakes. There were 6 sanitary sewer manholes installed with this project, along with 2,890 linear feet of sanitary sewer pipe, and 44 sanitary sewer services.

The existing pavement and sewer conditions had to be analyzed before a determination of each street's priority could be made. This was done utilizing core samples of the existing street surface materials, and video of the existing sanitary sewers.

Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. led the public input process and participated in property and business owner meetings to inform them of the coming activities. The construction of Buxton Street from Boston Avenue to Euclid Avenue and Clinton Avenue from North "H" Street to North "C" Street were on accelerated schedules to avoid conflict with increased traffic due to Simpson College being in session. Construction was staged to minimize the impact to the Indianola Public Library, Simpson College, and Irving Elementary School.

The project was funded by City GO bonds, and a special assessment on property owners. The Engineer's Estimate for this project was $1,905,157.00. The winning bid was $1,800,928.50, and the final cost for the project was $1,818,518.86
