NORTH KENWOOD DRIVE AND IOWA AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS
Indianola, Iowa
In February 2004, Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. completed the design and preparation of the plans and specifications for the extension and connection of Kenwood Boulevard and Iowa Avenue in the western part of Indianola, Iowa. The connection of the two collectors will provide residents in the northern and western parts of the City additional outlets to the primary arterials while promoting future development in the area. The project, partially funded with federal funds, was designed and let through the Iowa DOT development process. Remaining funds for the project were generated through assessment of adjacent property owners along with additional City funds.
Public hearings and meetings provided opportunities to meet with residents keeping them well informed of the project. Continued open communication with developers allowed us to share our design and create project continuity with adjacent development.
The project included a newly constructed embankment through the Cavitt Creek drainage basin utilizing a twin 8-foot by 8-foot reinforced concrete box culvert designed to convey a 100-year storm event. The existing rural section along Iowa Avenue was converted to an urban section with drainage improvements along the corridor. The total length of the project was approximately 1/2 mile with a total construction cost near $1,000,000.
The project was completed in the spring of 2005.
