HERITAGE MULTI-PURPOSE TRAIL (PHASE I & II)
Dubuque, Iowa

Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. completed the planning, design and project supervision for the $700,000 Phase I Heritage Multi-Purpose Trail project for the City of Dubuque. The Phase I project included about 3 miles of trail and was funded with a combination of Iowa Department of Transportation Statewide Enhancement grant, Iowa Department of Natural Resources grant, and City of Dubuque contribution.

The Phase I project extended along the Mississippi River and meanders through various sections of town.

The trail has components that range from 10 to 15-foot sections, paved road shoulders, river overlooks, interpretive stops, and a nature trail through a steep power line utility easement. Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. utilized landscape architect resources to provide conceptual schematics of the proposed trail in the planning phase, and worked extensively with the Iowa Department of Transportation to meet ASHTO guidelines concerning trail slopes and alignment during detailed design.

The project included acquisition of right-of-way easements from the Alliant Energy Company and local landowners.

A Phase II project grant was included as an IDOT funded project in 2003. The Phase II construction was completed in 2004 at a cost of approximately $300,000. Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. managed the construction for the City of Dubuque and took the project through final audits.
