CORALVILLE WASTEWATER TREATMENT IMPROVEMENTS
Coralville, Iowa
Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. was retained by the City of Coralville to develop a facility plan for the City's wastewater treatment facilities. The facility plan recommended a two-stage improvement project to the wastewater treatment facility.

The first phase of the improvement with a cost of approximately $7,300,000 involved the conversion of the treatment facility to a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment facility. The new SBR facility replaced the existing secondary treatment facilities that were abandoned.

A new primary treatment building with mechanical screening, stormwater pumping, grit removal and fine screening was constructed. Existing tankage was converted to sludge holding facilities and sludge thickening facilities. The project involved the installation of a gravity belt thickener to aid in solids dewatering.

The second stage improvements focused on the effluent disinfection and handling. A new ultraviolet disinfection facility was constructed. An effluent pump station was constructed at the wastewater treatment facility. A force main was constructed to convey the flow from the treatment facility for discharge to the Iowa River.
